| Breaking the High Test
Habit |
Now, more than ever, the high
price of high-test gas warrants the weaning
process. If regular (87 octane) is specified for
your engine, it should run well on that fuel, and
there's no need to bump up to a higher
grade.
The main reason for
using a higher octane is because the engine was
designed to use that grade, which is noted in the
owner's manual. READ

| HIGHER LEVEL OF
SATISFACTION |
|
According to the May 2008
issue of Consumer Reports, more Americans (71
percent) are very satisfied with independent
repair shops for vehicle service than new car
dealers (53 percent). To ensure that car owners
can continue to choose who will repair their
vehicles, Congress introduced the Motor Vehicle
Owners' Right to Repair Act (H.R.
2694).

| PROTECT DRIVER &
PASSENGERS FROM BREATHING DIRTY AIR--QUALITY CABIN
AIR FILTERS |
Roadside air - especially along
busy roads and highways - contains high levels of
pollen, dust, soot and smog whose harmful effects
are well documented. And children, with "young
lungs", are more sensitive to the effects of air
pollution than adults. So if you are taking the
kids to school or soccer practice with the windows
rolled up the air quality inside a car often can
be worse than the air outside - especially in
heavy traffic. To protect against
the dangers of these pollutants, modern vehicles
utilize a cabin air filter, which acts much like
the filter in the home's heating system - trapping
dust, dirt and grime from the road and pumping
clean air into the passenger compartment. Over
time, however, the cabin air filter can get
clogged and actually multiply the dangers
associated with these pollutants when the
vehicle's heating and air conditioning system
blows them into the closed interior with no avenue
for escape.

| WHEEL ALIGNMENT: FRONT OR
FOUR? |
Wheel alignment is perceived by
most motorists as pertaining to the front wheels -
the ones that steer the vehicle. For some, the
term fourwheel alignment conjures up visions of
inscrutable equipment and highly specialized
automotive service. Wheel alignment
is much simpler than most people think. It's a
matter of making sure the wheels are operating
parallel with one another and that the tires meet
the road at the correct angle. Normal
road shock and general wear and tear can knock
some of the steering and suspension angles out of
specification. When that happens, control of the
vehicle may be affected and the tires may begin to
wear unevenly and rapidly. The car needs to be
realigned to have all the proper angles restored.

| O2 SENSOR: AUTOMOTIVE
MIRACLE |
|
The oxygen (O2) sensor in your
car's engine is an amazing bit of
technology. Installed in the exhaust
system, it's about the size and shape of a spark
plug. Each day, when you start the car, it goes to
work, constantly comparing the oxygen content in
the exhaust gases to the oxygen in the outside
air. If the ratio doesn't meet manufacturer's
specifications, it signals the computer controls
in the fuel/emission control system and
adjustments are made. When the mix is
correct (14.7 parts of air to 1 part of fuel) it
saves gas and increases performance. A
malfunctioning O2 sensor not only is bad for your
fuel consumption and the environment, but it also
can damage the catalytic converter, a critical
part of the exhaust
system.
